Collins Gem?

New today on this page is the widget/link to the Collins dictionary and thesaurus. One of the most useful dictionaries for language learners to have is a THESAURUS, because it teaches you about the web of words of similar meaning and helps you discover the difference in use and collocation.

Many years ago I came across the small "Collins Gem" English Dictionary & Thesaurus (1990, HarperCollins) in a London Dillon's bookshop (Goodge Street, I think) and I still find it absolutely indispensable. It really is a "gem" -- full of useful definitions, succinct and informative on a reasonably large selection of words, yet small enough to fit in your pocket. Let's see if the website can live up to the excellent reputation of that handy little reference book. (On the Collins website you can also find a German<>English dictionary.)

When I was still a student, I used to read thesaurus dictionary; my favorite type of dictionary. Perhaps, it's because of the fact that I would love to have a huge vocabulary and being writer has always been my dream. It's a requirement if you want to be a good writer, isn't it? That's why I am happy that you posted such word that kills your curiosity. Hopefully, many people would choose to be like us; someone who loves reading dictionary so much!

Hi and thank you for your comment!

Strange as it may seem, it really can be quite beneficial to actually read some kind of dictionary once in a while. I love thesauri as well, but there is a host of other kinds of dictionaries worth dipping in to when you have a minute to spare.

Have you heard of the “reverse dictionary” for instance? It allows you to search for that elusive term hovering somewhere above the tip of your tongue by starting out from the long-form description of its meaning. Or how about the brand-new Dictionary of African Politics published by Oxford University Press? You’ll find the explanations for terms like “skirt-and-blouse voting” or “transhumance” you probably won't find anywhere else.

Best wishes,
Alexandra
